A fantastic choice of Jazz
2 lunchtime sessions a week with top local bands. Starts at 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday The Jazz Esquires
The Jazz Esquires have been playing at the Porthole since Beethoven was a lad. The book consists of over 400 numbers, swing, mainstream and modern jazz, arranged by Joe McMullon who played trumpet with the Esquires for many years. The present line-up is, one week, Mick Hill trumpet, Doug Turner tenor sax, Eddie Bellis trombone, Roy Gibson keyboard, John Duncan bass, Robin Douthwaite guitar and the leader Laurie Brown drums. Alternate weeks Laurie plays vibes with Bob Stephenson on drums and Mick is replaced by Miles Watson on trumpet, Dave is also a very fine singer. Interval music is provided by either the George Laing or Colin Johnson Trio and guest singers accompanied by Roy on keyboard.
Friday Rendezvous Jazz
The line up for Rendezvous jazz is one of flair and renown.
Barry Soulsby on clarinet, Iain MaAulay on trombone and vocals, our own Roy Gibson on keyboard, Jimmy 'The Brush' McKeown on drums and, of course, Maureen Hall is the voice and driving force behind the well travelled band. In amongst that jazz you'll find a smattering of swing and a little blues from time to time. Frequent guests drop in.
